Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Agility is the most fun you can have with your dog. It is a sport for dogs and handlers to get active together and strengthen that mutual bond. Dogs are required to learn how to negotiate obstacles such as hoops, tunnels, weaving poles, A Frame, dog walk, see saw and jumps.
Foundations training can start at any age, however physically most dogs need to be 12 months old to jump, this is due to the young dogs joints not being ready for too much work and being at risk of injury. Dogs need to be 18months to compete in agility. Younger dogs can train in agility but must only do flat work (work that is ground level) and their are many exercises we teach before a dog reaches 12 months of age.
Yes, any dog of any size or height can do agility. Dogs jump different heights in relation to their shoulder height ranging from 150mm to 600mm. The most important aspect is the health of the dog. It must be fit and preferably of a good weight.
It depends on the dog, but most dogs can train to competition level after a couple of years of good consistent training. If your dog is able to stay by your side and not run off and has been introduced to the many techniques and obstacles in agility you are ready to compete. We try to train to a level where dogs can be confident off lead after attending the Pre Agility Focus Course and Beginner's Agility Course. However every dog is different and some dogs need more specific attention and training to get to this point.
Agility Training with DOGS is run once a week, Sunday afternoons at Eumundi Showgrounds.
Beginner's 1
Agility training at DOGS Agility starts off with an 8 week Beginners course. In this course you will learn many basic agility concepts that will allow the dog to work better in the busy and exciting agility environment.
It's a fun course, which aims to make you the most important person in your dog's space and works to get the dogs more handler focused before we move on to working off lead in higher level courses. We focus on using positive training methods in order to help build a better working relationship between you and your dog.
We hope to build a great foundation for you and your dog with the aim of progressing onto Beginners 2 and a final prospect of competing in agility competitions at a later time if this is what you would like to do.
